8月29日 Dream and Difficulties. As I was following the National Democratic Convention for the last 4 days I might have learned a great deal about the politics and Obama but the one thing I learned are the American values and American dreams that you always hear in almost every speech. When you Google the word American Dream and land on Wikipedia you will see a very little paragraph that says greater material prosperity and opportunity to each. So what does it really mean to achieve the dream? Can there be a day when every American can proudly say today is the day where we have achieved this dream and just not for a day but to have a fool proof system to continue the dream. One such dream by Martin Luther King (I don’t want to sound knowledgeable about him as I know very little about King) he delivered – “I have a dream” speech 45 years ago yesterday. The fight for civil rights by this man and many others is an epic and we continue to hear them on every important milestone achieved by African Americans and one such day was yesterday. An African American nominated by Democratic Party to the position in White House. We saw a great celebration yesterday and we constantly heard that they got one step closer to the dream not the American Dream but the Kings dream and the promise from Barak Obama to restore the American Dream. Two dreams of this great nation might make this country stand out with people striving to achieve this dream and envision the vision of people who defined this dream. This great country has all problems as every other country
1. Color: Black and White, when I was young whenever there used to be a mention of words black and white I would think about two countries. Great Briton and South Africa, since the great African story happened in my life time it is significant to me. A fight that was given voice by Gandhi himself in South Africa. I did not understand the derogatory meaning of the word ‘brown’ till I came to US. Racial discrimination always meant to me was the fight between black and whites. Now when I look back at India, I understand how deeply rooted racial discrimination is there in India. So race is not an American problem, it is a problem in peoples mind throughout the world.
2. Freedom: This word from the time I remember has always been the great struggle by India to achieve its Independence and free itself as a Colony from the British rule. I could not think of any kind of freedom other than the historic day and the Speech of Nehru. The meaning of the word freedom for me stagnated there in simply when you free your country from a rule then it’s called freedom. Since then as I grew older there I kept leaning and added different dimensions to the word freedom. The scope got bigger and bigger and today I understand what forms and values of freedom people talk about.
3. Religion: By far the biggest division in the world and the most well understood and well known of all the difficulties that any country faces. It could be the violence between the Hindus and the Christians in Orissa today or Hindus and Muslims that has been going on for years. Today one of the disagreements in this country is about Gay Marriages, Abortions etc. My understanding of a religion has been really fickle. I was born as a Muslim, I have a greater interest in Hindu mythology than my counterparts and I have religious like Tohah, Bibile and Book of Mormons that I have to read. (It’s another thing that I don’t like to read but I think I should do this.)
4. Fight for Energy and Power
I have to go now and end this abruptly. |
