5月28日 Gandhi or Ghandy or Khan ???A couple of us were trying to explain Lowell to how Sonia Gandhi is not related to Mahatma Gandhi. In the whole explanation there was a missing link to why “Gandhi” was the surname.
Indira Priyadarshini daughter of Nehru (First Prime Minister of India) married Feroze Khan, Son of Nawab Khan. Nawab khan married a Parsi and who had a surname Ghandy which is common among Parsi’s. Nawab Khan married this parsi women and converted her to be a Muslim.
Should have been:
Nawab Khan married a parsi women and converted her to be a muslim. So Feroze (son of Nawab Khan) technically should be having a family name of Khan. When Feroze khan married Indira Priyadarshini (Daughter of Nehru) she should have inherited ‘Khan’ as family name and so Rajiv gandhi should have been Rajiv Khan and Sonia Gandhi, Sonia Khan.
What it is now:
Feroze Khan had to inherit his mothers name and change the spelling to “Gandhi” from Ghandy (Speculations are that this change of name Idea was an order from Mahatma Gandhi himself to Nehru which has nothing to do with change of religion) before marriage. So with a change of Name Affidavit Feroze Khan became Feroze Gandhi and the rest is history. So today we have Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and so on and so forth. Identity Crisis.
